Will Miers | Three Pointers Leadership Series | 08

Technology Director

Metropolitan School District of Martinsville

For the latest episode of our Three Pointers Leadership Series, Chris Hawkins returns to where his own basketball story began: Martinsville.

Chris sits down with longtime friend Will Miers, Technology Director at the Metropolitan School District of Martinsville, inside the historic Wooden Middle School gym, originally built as the high school gym in 1913. Years ago, basketball brought Chris and Will together, and this historic site is the perfect place to talk about preparation, mentorship, and leadership.

Switching things up this time, Will takes the three-pointer—but can he keep Chris’s no-miss streak alive?

Will’s connection to the district runs deep. After starting his career at the ground level and working his way into its top technology role, he gained an understanding of the district from nearly every angle—as a former student, an employee, and a member of the community. Today, that perspective helps him recognize what is working, what could be better, and where he has an opportunity to make a difference.

Much of his approach to leadership can be traced back to the basketball court. As a younger player, Will saw firsthand how preparation, effort, and discipline helped strong players grow. He learned to follow their example, put in the extra work, and be ready when an opportunity came.

Those lessons were reinforced by Superintendent Eric Bowlen, a mentor whose trust, attention to detail, and willingness to give people a chance shaped the leader Will strives to be. Together, those experiences taught him that leadership is not simply about holding a position—it is about how you prepare, how you treat people, and how you show up for your team.

“That is how I have always run any team that I’ve had—I lead by example.”

From the historic gym to the district technology office, Will continues to put that philosophy into practice. And when it was time for the final shot, Chris knew exactly what to do—pass the ball to Will.
