Great technology leadership is rarely built by one person. It grows through trust, consistency, and a team willing to keep building on what came before.
In this episode of our Three Pointers Leadership Series, Chris Hawkins visits Memorial Gymnasium in Columbus, Indiana, to talk with Nick Williams, Technology Director at Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation about K–12 technology leadership.
With the pressure of an 8-for-8 streak, can Chris keep his perfect record alive on the tight rims in Columbus?
The 6,500-seat gym provides a fitting backdrop for Nick, whose connection to the community runs deep. He graduated from the district, has served there for more than 20 years, and now leads the team responsible for supporting its technology.
Nick credits much of the district’s success to strong relationships and consistent support across the organization. From the superintendent and curriculum team to special education and technology, departments work together with a shared commitment to educational technology.
That support gives Nick the freedom to lead his team in the way he believes best serves both the district and its students. It has also helped create a close-knit culture where people support one another and continue building on the work of previous technology leaders.
“Our team is very tight. We help each other out.”
Nick’s path to technology leadership began in the classroom, where he taught biology before moving into an educational technology position as the district expanded its technology adoption. Through the Indiana CTO Council mentorship program, he gained a clearer understanding of K–12 technology leadership and strengthened his leadership skills.
Now, after approximately eight years as a technology director, Nick is paying that support forward. He has mentored four other technology professionals in Indiana, helping them navigate their own paths into leadership.
As an Indiana football fan, Nick sees an important leadership lesson in Head Coach Curt Cignetti’s success: be intentional, trust the plan, and stay focused on the process. Nick brings that same mindset to education, approaching each school year as a cycle of preparation, execution, reflection, and planning for what comes next.
